OCUL Celebrates Five Years of Omni

Published on 2024-12-09

19 Universities, 25.8 Million Resources, One Shared Library System.

The Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) is proudly celebrating the five-year anniversary of Omni – the academic search tool powered by expert teams from 19 university library partners. Today, campus communities across the province use Omni for fast, easy access to nearly 26 million resources to succeed in their learning, research and teaching goals.

As an outcome of OCUL’s Collaborative Futures initiative, Omni brings to life the vision of Ontario university students, faculty and researchers experiencing a large, diverse, province-wide library collection, moving seamlessly between different types of content.

“It’s been incredible to see the vision of Collaborative Futures come to fruition and significantly develop over the past five years. Being a part of Omni means our campus communities can discover and request texts not available locally and the search tool broadens the reach of our individual library collections. I look forward to seeing what the next five years bring in terms of innovation, impact and the further development of this partnership,” says Robin Canuel, Chair of the Collaborative Futures Steering Committee and University Librarian, Lakehead University.

By collaborating and sharing expertise at Ontario university libraries, the 19 Omni partners build capacity through learning new skills while providing efficient   access to information in every field of study.

“OCUL has a long history of collaboration and resource sharing to support robust scholarship in Ontario. Omni reflects this commitment through the increased access to books and specialized content across participating partners while helping library teams work together to problem solve and build innovative information technology systems,” explains Amy Greenberg, OCUL Executive Director.

Omni went live in December 2019 at 14 universities. Since then, an additional five schools have joined the partnership, with Toronto Metropolitan University most recently launching the academic search tool this past September.
